Is Casablanca Worth Visiting? Our Honest Travel Experience

Casablanca is often romanticised thanks to its name, its coastal vibe and its role in classic cinema. We travelled as a Muslim couple expecting a warm cultural experience, good food and a city that blends tradition with modern living. While there were some highlights, our trip came with challenges you should be aware of before visiting.

The Vibe and People

We found locals quite reserved and sometimes awkward in interactions. It could be cultural or simply our experience but the warmth that many travellers associate with Morocco did not really shine through for us in Casablanca.

The language barrier was also significant. Even simple communication, especially when arranging transport or dining, felt difficult at times.

Card Payments and Internet Struggles

One of the biggest challenges was paying by card. Many restaurants either refused card payments or our cards kept getting declined, despite working elsewhere internationally. It was inconvenient and a little stressful.

After dining, we asked for WiFi since we needed to process payments and navigate. One restaurant completely refused to give it. It may be normal there but as tourists it felt uncomfortable and left us with a negative impression.

Transport and Safety Feelings

When using Careem or taxis, drivers insisted my husband sit in the front and me in the back. We were told it was law. Regardless of whether that is true, it did not feel secure and gave us a sense of vulnerability.

As a couple travelling, it did take some comfort away from our journey.

The Highlight: Hassan II Mosque

Without question, the most beautiful and worthwhile experience was visiting Hassan II Mosque. It is breathtaking in scale and architecture and provides a peaceful spiritual break from the bustle of the city.

So Would We Recommend Casablanca?

Casablanca was not the easiest city for us as tourists. From payment challenges to communication barriers and transport discomfort, it felt like we were constantly trying to solve problems rather than relax.

If your main purpose is tourism, there are cities in Morocco that seem to be spoken about far more positively such as Marrakesh, Chefchaouen or Agadir. Casablanca may appeal more to business travellers or those with specific interests in modern Moroccan society.

Final Thoughts

We always aim to share honest experiences and it is important to say that every destination works differently for every traveller. Some may have a fantastic time here but based on our visit, we would recommend planning carefully or perhaps choosing another Moroccan city for a smoother experience.
