Kuala Lumpur Destination Review

In summary, a trip to Kuala Lumpur is a must. Malaysia’s capital city is an attractive location for both families and couples. We have never met such beautiful people as those in this country. The kindest inhabitants in the world are Malaysians. Everyone was cordial, from shopkeepers to cab drivers and waiters.

Everything in KL is incredibly affordable, including food, transport, and entrance fees to tourist attractions. During our visit, KL had great weather. It sometimes reached 32°C, which we loved.

We stayed at the Ascott aparthotel, which was just a short walk from the famous Petronas Towers. It was also close to several great spots where we could grab a bite to eat. For us one thing we loved here is that all their food is halal hence no need of hunting for halal options.

During our short trip to KL, we enjoyed a wide range of attractions. These included the Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, the Islamic Arts Museum, Berjaya Times Square, Bukit Bintang, Chinatown, and Little India.

Some attractions were within walking distance of our hotel and close to each other. For others, we used Grab for transportation. Grab is just an amazing taxi service which is fast, friendly and cheap as well. Besides, it also offers food delivery like Uber in UK but with cheaper prices.

Best Hotels in Kuala Lumpur

Ascott KL

The Ascott KL is perfectly located. It's just a minute’s walk from major attractions like Suria KLCC and the Petronas Towers. Being so close, we had breakfasts at different spots in Suria KLCC. Fresh croissants and pretzels were our favorites from the bakeries there.

We picked up groceries from the ISETAN downstairs. It was perfect for quick snacks or breakfast in our room. Conveniently, near McDonald’s was BBQ Nights, a great little spot. Anyone traveling through KL should definitely stop by.

We booked this hotel on Booking.com– our favorite site for holiday rentals! The deals are great, and the loyalty program offers perks. You can get free upgrades and complimentary breakfasts at the 'Genius' levels.

The staff at Ascott KL were incredibly friendly, and overall, we’d rate this hotel a 9/10.

Our room was spacious and felt like home. It had a lounge area and kitchen, perfect for couples and families.

The hotel had a private sunbathing area and swimming pool. There was even a small infinity pool with beautiful sunset views.

We liked that we could wash and dry our clothes for a small fee. This was really convenient since we were traveling to other places.

The aparthotel was immaculately clean and great value for money. The only downside was the awkward placement of the TV in our room, but we managed. A small suggestion—offering milk for UK guests would be a nice touch so we can enjoy a proper cuppa on holiday!

We would recommend this hotel to everyone staying in Kuala Lumpur. It was one of our favorite stays, and we would definitely consider staying here again.

5 Best Things to Do in Kuala Lumpur

1. Petronas Twin Towers

We visited the famous Petronas Twin Towers, and we are definitely glad we did. The views from here were absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

They take you up to the 41st floor first, this is the Sky Bridge where you can have a walk about and take in the views of Kuala Lumpur. We then were taken up to the 86th floor, this is the Observation Deck, where you will find not only more mesmerising views of the beautiful city, but also a gift shop, chance to have some pictures taken by the attraction’s designated photographers, and also some activities for both children and adults.

Not only that, but just outside of the Petronas Twin Towers, in the evenings they hold a fountain show. This is beautiful to watch as a couple for a romantic evening stroll in the park, or even a family relaxed evening out.

We definitely recommend you visit this attraction during your visit to the city of Kuala Lumpur.

2. Batu Caves

This attraction is a popular recommendation for things to do in Kuala Lumpur. Entry is free, but remember to follow the dress code, as it’s home to Hindu temples. Be prepared to climb 272 steps, so wear trainers and bring water to stay hydrated in the Malaysian heat.

After the first set of stairs, you’ll enter a cave with a temple. The cave is damp and dirty, so be cautious. There’s also another set of stairs leading to additional temples. Although we didn’t see any, be aware of monkeys, as they might take your belongings. We did encounter some chickens and pigeons, which you might want to avoid if you’re not fond of them.

At the entrance, you’ll find stalls selling food, drinks, and souvenirs. While we were glad to check it off our list, we didn’t find the visit particularly special and wouldn’t go again.

3. Bukit Bintang

We had a great time walking around Bukit Bintang. You could easily while away a whole day there. There are lots of shops and restaurants. You can find big-name brands and more affordable stores. H&M is really big there!

The malls have prayer rooms and places to wash. This is great for people who need to pray. Bukit Bintang is even more fun in the evening. The fountains turn on and the lights shine. It feels like you're in New York City! It’s also right next to Little India, so you can visit two attractions in one trip.

4. Islamic Arts Museum

The Islamic Arts Museum is a must-visit in Kuala Lumpur. The Islamic Arts Museum is a beautiful place. You can see amazing Islamic history and architecture.

The museum has models of mosques from all over the world. They also have many Qurans from long ago.

One cool thing was a super mini Quran that you needed a magnifying glass to read. It was captivating! The museum also has a lovely café and restaurant where we enjoyed some snacks and meals. We highly recommend visiting, and if you’re a student, be sure to show your student ID (even UNIDAYS) for a discount!

5. Berjaya Times Square

A couple told us about this attraction. They visited before COVID. But it seems like the pandemic affected it. When we visited in August 2022, there wasn’t much to do, and strict COVID measures were still in place. It might be worth checking out now, as they could be back to their usual operations post-pandemic.

Best Halal Food in Kuala Lumpur

1. BBQ Nights

BBQ Nights in Kuala Lumpur is a true gem of a restaurant. Located in Menara Rohas PureCircle, it’s just a short walk from the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC Mall. Though it’s next to a McDonald's, don’t be fooled—BBQ Nights is the go-to spot for mouth-watering skewers.

The skewers are freshly made right before your eyes, with chicken and lamb cooked to perfection on an open fire. The meat is served immediately, ensuring it’s always hot and bursting with flavor.

One of the best things about BBQ Nights is the incredible value for money. Despite the high quality of the food, the prices are very affordable, making it accessible to everyone. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an amazing dining experience in Kuala Lumpur.

Overall, we give BBQ Nights a 10/10. The food is outstanding, and the location is perfect for visitors. If you’re looking for a delicious meal, head to BBQ Nights—you won’t be disappointed.

2. Moza

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Moza, located in the Islamic Arts Museum in KL. The Mee Goreng Mamak was a standout dish, exceeding my husband’s expectations with its rich flavor and perfectly cooked noodles. The samosas were also a hit, offering a delightful crunch and complementary taste.

The restaurant's inviting ambiance added to the overall dining experience. We also liked visiting the Islamic Arts Museum. We saw many Qurans from different times. It was really interesting.

Moza is affordable, falling within the £-££ range. We’d rate our experience 7.5/10, with minor points deducted for some inconsistencies in service. Overall, we highly recommend trying the Mee Goreng Mamak and samosas at Moza for a tasty and culturally enriching dining experience in KL.
