Should students start GCSEs in year 9? šŸ¤”

Being a teacher of an option subject (not that I think Computer Science should be optional šŸ˜‚)

Once students decide in January what subjects they are doing in the next year, there is a shift of mindset. šŸ§

Students think if they did not pick your subject, then they donā€™t need to do the work, or in the best-case scenario when they have not selected it as an option, they will do the work just to do the bare minimum and have no incentive to put in the hard work they used to before.

Would it be more beneficial to pick the options at the end of the year in year 8?

Or

At the end of the year, in year 9?

This way, there is less disruption mid-way through the year.

Please share your thoughts below and how your school tackles these issues.
