I Drank Coffee Made From S*** Again....
Yes you read that right. I drank coffee made from poo. Again. And honestly, I loved it even more the second time.
Let us set the scene. It is 2023. We have just embarked on a journey that our future selves would later call the best holiday of our lives.
Bali.
Before that though, we had a stop in Kuala Lumpur and let me tell you something. Kuala Lumpur might just be our favourite city on earth. If it was not so far from the UK we might have chosen KL over Qatar. There is just something about that place. It feels warm, alive and effortless.
From KL, we boarded a flight to Bali. We landed at night in Kuta and had booked one night there. Our expectations went from paradise to a horror movie very quickly. The outside looked like a post apocalypse scene and the inside felt like a survival bunker where someone tried to make it look peaceful with plants and a pond. We avoided eye contact with every corner worried a lizard would jump out. We were exhausted. Straight to bed.
Hungry, tired and confused we opened Grab to order food and suddenly we saw it. McDonalds blankets. I am not joking. Someone in Bali is tucked in right now under a McDonalds duvet and sleeping peacefully.
Next morning, we escaped Kuta. Our next stay was Kanaha Villas and it was incredible. Private pool, beautiful interiors, sunshine. The only problem. Lizards. Everywhere. Again, something we are not used to.
Our driver picked us up for the coffee plantation tour and there it was. The moment nobody sane has ever waited for. Coffee made from poo.
Surrounded by rice terraces, golden blue pools and stunning nature, someone once said let us feed coffee beans to a wild animal and then brew whatever comes out. Humanity is wild.
We tried it because it was only around five pounds instead of the usual thirty to forty. First sip. Meh. Good coffee if you are a coffee person but the novelty was the real thing. Would we have it again? Probably not for that price.
But then something unexpected happened. We tried tea. Freshly brewed. Avocado tea, coconut tea and hibiscus rosella tea. Life changing. Stunning. Absolutely unreal. Forget the poo coffee. Bali tea is the star of the show.
If you go to Bali, try the Luwak coffee if you must but do not leave without trying their teas. Trust us.
Would We Do It Again
Yes. Somehow yes. Not the Kuta lizard bunker but the trip, the villas, the rice terraces and the tea. Bali is magic.
Travel Tip: Book airport transfers in Bali in advance. Taxis can be chaotic and prices can vary a lot at the airport.
Travel changes you. Sometimes it gives you sunsets and soul warming experiences. Sometimes it gives you lizards, confusion and poo flavoured coffee. But that is the beauty of it.
Until the next adventure. And yes we will still be drinking questionable things for content.
